In the early 20th century, the Benedictine monks from the ancient abbey of São Bento in Bahia, Brazil, established the Abbey of Mount St. Benedict in 1912. Seeking seclusion from the increasing number of visitors, they constructed a secondary monastic structure atop Mount Tabor between 1918 and 1922. This facility included fifteen rooms, a chapel, a large hall, and two 40-foot towers. However, due to the challenging terrain and difficulty in transporting supplies, the property was abandoned, leaving behind only concrete ruins and remnants of the Tapia Castle
The hike to Mount Tabor is approximately 50 minutes uphill through a pine forest, with a return descent taking about 50 minutes. The trail is considered moderately challenging, making it suitable for hikers of varying skill levels .
